Melora Griffis is a painter with a multi-disciplinary practice. She is a graduate of The Neighborhood Playhouse, holds an MFA from VCFA, and a BFA from RISDY. Melora has written, designed, choreographed/directed, and performed in, over a dozen performance art works in New York City and abroad. Griffis received her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts (Montpelier, VT). Melora Griffis spent much of her childhood in Buffalo and on the shores of Lake Erie. She returns after living and working in New York City for thirty years, to create mixed media paintings that transform familiar buildings, eclectic corners, and majestic landmarks into a whimsical body of work, one that brings her own perspective – an inspired, feminine veracity – to the city of Buffalo.
I make clusters of paintings, drawings, and objects, in series like spokes of a wheel with a shared center. Griffis’ figurative works lean toward abstraction encouraging the viewer to engage with her paintings prismatically. Melora makes oil paintings as well as mixed media works, both flat and sculptural, that combine found textiles pieced together with intentionally uneven hand stitching in various colored threads.

Griffis holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is a graduate of The Neighborhood Playhouse. She is the recipient of six fellowships abroad and in the US, including the Edward F. Albee Foundation. This is her 17th solo exhibition on the East coast.
